Mark 10:17-31
This section of scripture includes a well-known biblical story. There is the rich man who asks Jesus what he needs to do to inherit eternal life. Jesus tells the man to sell his possessions and give the money to the poor in order to have treasure in heaven, only to have the man walk away sadly due to the fact that he had many possessions. This story is a challenge to me – what do I hold to that keeps me from experiencing and doing what is best in God’s eyes, to have treasure in heaven? However, there is hope in this scripture! For even while Jesus was talking to the rich man, verse 21 (NLV) states, “Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him.” Therefore, while Jesus’ response was a challenge, it did not separate the man from Jesus’ love. Verse 27 includes “everything is possible with God.” While scripture challenges us to live better lives and grow as Christians, we are also reminded that Jesus’ love is always here for us. And there is always hope, because “everything is possible with God.”
