Mark 6:30-44, March 6
Mark 6: 30-44
The account of feeding the five thousand is the only miracle that occurs in all four gospels, so there must be a message for us in this fascinating story.
After a pretty tumultuous few days Jesus, and the disciples decide to go to a quiet place to rest. They were followed by a multitude of people and since He recognized His sheep without a shepherd, he began teaching them. Now It's beginning to get dark, so the disciples suggest that Jesus send the crowds away in order to get food for their families. In verse 16, Jesus said, “That isn’t necessary, you feed them. What, that much food would take more than half a year's wages!?
Oh how we question God even today. Still the disciples are trying to figure out how they could obey Jesus’ command. They finally find a meager dinner of 5 loaves and 2 fish and tell Jesus that was all they have and they can't feed this crowd. That’s when Jesus, probably exasperatedly, said, “Bring the food here.” And you know the rest.
How many times do we attempt to deal with life's difficulties on our own and become frustrated or even angry? Then the lightbulb goes off and we let go and put it in His hands. The disciples said, “We can’t do it,” and then handed the food to Jesus. One of the most difficult things about faith is letting go. If we will trust Him, He might just allow us to participate in the miracle.
